Year 1 - Semester 1
Type | CP | CP From |
Core | 6 | ENGG1800: Introduction to Engineering A |
Core | 6 | ENGG1801: Engineering Computing |
Core | 3 | MATH1001: Differential Calculus |
Core | 3 | MATH1002: Linear Algebra |
6 | Junior Arts Units Note: Students thinking of specialising in Chemical Biomolecular Engineering are advised to take CHEM1101 Chemistry 1A instead. |
Note: The list above shows Semester 1 core units for Flexible First Year Stream A as part of an Engineering/Arts combined degree. Stream A provides choice of entry into the Engineering areas of Aeronautical, Aeronautical(Space), Chemical, Civil, Mechanical or Mechanical(Space). The list is subject to the following variations.
1. Students planning to specialise in Civil Engineering should take PHYS1001 Physics 1 in place of ENGG1801. ENGG1801 will be taken in second year instead.
2. Students planning to specialise in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering should take CHEM1101 Chemistry 1A in place of the junior Arts unit.
3. Students may take advanced alternatives in place of MATH1001 and MATH1002 but should check with the Faculty of Science before doing so.
Students wishing to proceed to the degree of Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering should enrol in their chosen specialisation in second semester. Choice of other Engineering specialisations must be decided by the end of the year.
Year 1 - Semester 2
Type | CP | CP From |
Core | 6 | ENGG1802: Engineering Mechanics |
Core | 3 | MATH1003: Integral Calculus and Modelling |
Core | 3 | MATH1005: Statistical Thinking with Data |
6 | Junior Arts Units | |
6 | Engineering Core Options |
Note: The list above shows Semester 2 core units and elective choices for Flexible First Year Stream A as part of a combined degree. Stream A provides choice of entry into the Engineering areas of Aeronautical, Aeronautical(Space), Chemical, Civil, Mechanical or Mechanical(Space). The list is subject to the following variations, according to the specialisation chosen.
1. ENGG1802 is not required for specialisation in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. Combined Engineering/Commerce students considering this specialisation should take CHEM1102 instead.
2. Engineering Core Options should be selected according to planned specialisation as follows:
* AMME1550: for Aeronautical, Mechanical and Mechanical(Space) Engineering.
* CHNG1103: Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering.
* ENGG1803: Civil Engineering.
3. Students may enrol in more advanced alternatives to MATH1003 and MATH1005 but should check with the Faculty of Science before doing so.
Students should consult school advisors so that a correct choice of core and elective is made.

Block 2 - Junior Arts Units (Min CP: 12,Max CP: 12)
Note: Junior Arts units should be selected in first year so as to ensure that 84 credit points of Arts units, including one major, can be completed across degree as a whole. Every major requires at least 24 credit points of senior units plus varying amounts of intermediate and junior credit points as prerequisites for the senior units. For details of specific units of study and majors please see Arts Faculty handbook at http://sydney.edu.au/handbooks
Course: | Flexible First Year (Stream A) / Arts (2013) |
CP Required: | 48 |
Min FT Duration: | 1.00 Years |
Min PT Duration: | N/A |
Faculty/School: | University Archive |
Years Offered: | 2014, 2013 |
Requirements: | 1. Undergraduate students entering first year may choose to undertake the Flexible First Year program, instead of choosing a particular degree or stream. Flexible First Year Stream A is designed to lead students into the following branches of Engineering: Aeronautical, Aeronautical(Space, Chemical and Biomolecular, Civil, Mechanical and Mechanical(Space). 2. Fiexible First Year students undertake a common set of core units in semesters one and two with a choice of elective units in semester two for the specialisation that students plan to pursue in later years. Transfer from Flexible First Year into specialist degrees is subject in some cases to entry conditions based on previous ATAR or marks achieved in Flexible First Year units. See current Faculty of Engineering and Information Technologies handbook of these requirements at http://sydney.edu.au/handbooks 3. Students taking Stream A as part of a combined degree are advised to select 6 credit points of junior units from the second degree in each semester of Stream A, except where choosing to specialise in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering where students are advised to take second degree units in Semester 2 only. For further details of combined degree enrolment sequence, see the the combined degree sections of this website. 4. Students wishing to transfer to Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering should transfer to that stream in Semester 2. 5. Please consult school advisers so that a correct choice of core and elective is made. |
