Civil Engineering / Project Management (2012)

Note: This course version applies only to students first enrolling in 2012.
WARNING: This course version is currently under review and is subject to change.

1. Overview

Course: Civil Engineering / Project Management (2012)
CP Required: 240
Min FT Duration: 5.00 Years
Min PT Duration: N/A
Faculty/School: University Archive
Years Offered: 2014, 2013, 2012

2. Requirements

For the combined BE(Civil)/BPM degree the candidate is required to complete 240 credit points comprising:

(a) 138 credit points of CORE Civil units, with

(b) 6 credit points of Civil Elective (see Note 1),

and

(c) 66 credit points of CORE Project Management units,

and

(d) 18 credit points of Project Management electives (see Note 2),

and

(e) 12 credit points of additional electives (See "Additional Electives" below).

Note 1: Civil Engineering normally has 144 credit points of core units but the unit CIVL3812 Project Appraisal does not count for credit in the combined BE(Civil)/BPM degree. Therefore the candidate must choose another Civil elective to take its place to make up the required 144 credit points Civil core units. Please note that because of similaraties with BPM units, the following Civil electives do not count for credit in the combined BE(Civil)/BPM degree: CIVL3805, CIVL4815, CIVL3813, CIVL4810 and CIVL4814.

Note 2: Currently the Project Management degree has only 3 available elective units to fill the 3 elective slots, so in effect all the PM electives are compulsory. However this will change when more electives become available.

Civil Engineering Specialisation

Enrolment in a specialisation in the BE (Civil) degree is available to exceptional students who meet certain requirements.

To gain the specialisation award students must first enrol in the stream and then complete at least 3 electives from the relevant specialiastion listed below and undertake an Honours Thesis or Engineering Project in a related topic. (Note that the Construction Engineering and Management Specialisation is not available in the combined BE/BPM degree.)

(i) Structural Engineering Specialisation: CIVL3235; CIVL5266; CIVL5269; CIVL5458

(ii) Environmental Specialisation: CIVL3614; CIVL5351; CIVL5668; CIVL5670

(iii) Geotechnical Engineering Specialisation: CIVL3411; CIVL5351; CIVL5452; CIVL5458

In order to satisfy the requirements for specialisation the candidate may need to complete more than 240 credit points. Decisions on whether or not to proceed with a specialisation may be left until second or third year as the required electives are usually taken in the last two years of the degree.

Additional Electives

Candidates must complete 12 credit points of any additional elective units of study within Civil Engineering or Project Management. There are no "Free Electives" available in this degree.

Choice of electives will depend upon subject availability; timetabling and prerequisite conditions.

Engineering Final Year

Students in the Engineering Honours program must enrol in CIVL4022 & CIVL4023, students in the Pass Program must enrol in CIVL4023 & CIVL4024.

With special permission from the Director of the Learning and Teaching; Civil Engineering; it is possible to take Thesis or Project A in Semester 2 and Thesis or Project B in Semester 1.

Faculty Resolutions

Details of relevant Faculty resolutions are available via the university handbook site at: http://sydney.edu.au/handbooks/

Most Mathematics; Chemistry; Physics and Computer Science units of study offered by the Faculty of Science can be replaced by an equivalent advanced level units of study subject to prerequisite conditions (as required by the Faculty of Science) being met.
