Brief Handbook Description: This UoS offers fundamental knowledge about the working principles of scanning probe microscopies, microsensors and other key instrumentation in nanotechnology with a focus on biophysical, biomedical and material science applications. Scanning probe microscopes work in a variety of environments ranging from vacuum to liquids, and are frequently used to study samples spanning from single atoms all the way up to live cells and tissues. Besides imaging, these technologies enable the manipulation of matter and the acquisition of many physical and chemical properties of samples up to the atomic scale.

The knowledge provided in this UoS is intended to improve the competences of the students to understand, use and create technologies of great value in nanotechnology with applications across multiple disciplines.
Assumed Knowledge: Knowledge in calculus, linear differential equations, basic mechanics and electromagnetism.

T&L Activities: Tutorial: Two hours of Tutorial per week. One of the hours may be spent on additional lecturing material. Students complete Tutorials with Tutor assistance based on material covered in lectures.

Demonstration: Two laboratory demonstration session of four hours. During the laboratory demonstration sessions the students will guided through experiments to put into practise and better understand important concepts covered during the unit. The demonstration sessions will provide additional knowledge about experimental work and instrumentation

Independent Study: Students will require to work on the material covered in lectures to get a better understanding of the course content. The use of text books and other resources is advisable.

During lectures and tutorials the students will be trained in math and physics methods required to describe and understand key technologies and their applications in nanotechnology.

Lab demonstration sessions will be used to experimentally reinforce the understanding of fundamental concepts described in the lectures as well to advance their knowledge of scientific methods and instruments

Guided by lectures, tutorials and lab demonstration sessions, the students will develop an important understanding of key instrumentation in nanotechnology and its applications in biophysics, biomedical engineering and material science. (2) Engineering/ IT Specialisation (Level 3)
The students will develop their creativity, analytical thinking and problem solving skills by modelling and calculating solutions to theoretical questions, as well as by observing and analysing experimental setups. These activities will be fostered during lectures, tutorials, lab demonstration sessions and assessments. (3) Problem Solving and Inventiveness (Level 3)
The nature of the content will bring together applications and concepts from different disciplines including physics, biology and medicine, material science and engineering, stimulating the development of an interdisciplinary vision. The students will work with multidisciplinary concepts at both, theoretical and experimental level throughout lectures, tutorials and lab demonstration sessions. (5) Interdisciplinary, Inclusiveness, Influence (Level 3)
The students will be divided in small groups to find, interpret and critically analyse scientific papers and/or patents related to material covered in the UoS. The students will orally present and discuss their in-depth analyses and findings. (6) Communication and Inquiry/ Research (Level 3)

3. Understand the value and need of multidisciplinary approaches to productively address scientific and technological challenges at the nanoscale in the interphase of physics, biology and engineering.

4. Understand and employ fundamental scientific working principles related to microresonators, scanning probe microscopies and other technologies of interest in nanotechnology
(3) Problem Solving and Inventiveness (Level 3)
5. Develop creative solutions changing the configuration and/or properties of key elements of microresonators and scanning probe microscopy techniques to theoretically achieve proposed aims.

Assessment Description: Quiz: A paper based quiz covering lecture and tutorial material.

Oral presentations: Short presentations performed in small teams describing and critically analysing research and technological outcomes found in scientific literature and/or patents related to the course material.

Final exam: Written final exam covering the whole course material. The exam will include calculation questions.
