Brief Handbook Description: Innovation is widely-recognised as a major driver of economic growth. Yet innovation projects can be difficult to manage: they typically involve a high level of uncertainty, and many organisations are unsatisfied with the level of innovation they achieve. In this unit of study, we focus on issues in the management of innovation projects at the individual project level, organisational level and across networks of organisations. Since a systematic approach can and does improve our effectiveness in managing innovation, we begin by exploring several different process models of the stages through which innovation projects are managed. We discuss context and challenges which impact such projects, as well as the concepts of creativity and intellectual property management. Using focused case studies, we analyse best practice in the structures and processes that organisations can provide to enable innovation, as well as to support the search, selection, implementation, dissemination, feedback and evaluation stages of their innovative projects. We also examine the impact of networks on innovation (e.g. collaboration networks), national innovation policies and systems, and trends towards open innovation.

T&L Activities: The unit will be delivered online, with weekly readings, lecture slides and videos, and activities. Participation in online activities is compulsory and your participation contributes to the course assessment. The lectures will provide an introduction to the topics, and form a basis for you to explore these topics further. The online activities are intended as social learning experiences where you actively engage with the material and eachother, discussing the content and sharing insights.

It is expected that students will spend an average of 6 hours on additional work per week of the semester. This time will include course readings (textbook and articles), researching and writing assignments, and reviewing lectures. In periods where assignments need to be prepared the required workload may be greater than average.

The weekly readings seek to stimulate our thinking around the lecture content and discussions, and provide students with examples of how innovation is managed in various settings. Students are expected to prepare the weekly readings as directed by the lecturer BEFORE online activities and group discussions.

Assessment Description: * indicates an assessment task which must be repeated if a student misses it due to special consideration.

1 and 2. Students describe and critically analyse the management and strategy around an innovative project, in the context of literature on this topic. First submission will be a literature review, second will be a complete report.

3 and 4. Students describe and critically analyse the framework/approach to the management of innovation in an organisation, in the context of literature on this topic. Oral presentations will be conducted (by video) in advance of a written report being due.

5. Class participation mark will be based on (compulsory) participation in online activities. This will be composed of delivering an online presentation in one week of semester (as assigned in week 1), as well as participating in online activities in all other weeks as directed.

Text matching software will be used for plagiarism detection.

IMPORTANT: There may be statistically defensible moderation when combining the marks from each component to ensure consistency of marking between markers, and alignment of final grades with unit outcomes.

Assignments (without formally applying for special consideration) submitted electronically after 11.59 pm on the due date will be considered to have been submitted late. For every calendar day up to and including ten calendar days after the due date, a penalty of 5% of the maximum awardable marks will be applied to late work. The penalty will be calculated by first marking the work, and then subtracting 5% of the maximum awardable mark for each calendar day after the due date. For work submitted more than ten calendar days after the due date a mark of zero will be awarded. For the weekly class participation assessments, late submission will result in forfeiting the marks for that week`s component. (Exceptions apply for special consideration).
Assessment Feedback: 1 and 2. Written feedback will be provided on the literature review and reports.

3. Verbal and/or written feedback will be provided to the groups.

4. Written feedback will be provided on the reports.

5. Written feedback will be provided on online presentations, and the tutor will directly contact students whose general participation in online activities is not at a passable level (in multiple weeks).
