Brief Handbook Description: This unit of study teaches the fundamental knowledge on the importance, organisational context and professional practice in project management. It serves as an introduction to project management practices for non-PM students. For PM students, this unit lays the foundation to progress to advanced PM subjects. Although serving as a general introduction unit, the focus has been placed on scope, time, cost, and integration related issues.

Specifically, the unit aims to: Introduce students to the institutional, organisational and professional environment for today's project management practitioners as well as typical challenges and issues facing them; Demonstrate the importance of project management to engineering and organisations; Demonstrate the progression from strategy formulation to execution of the project; Provide a set of tools and techniques at different stages of a project's lifecycle with emphasis on scope, time, cost and integration related issues; Highlight examples of project success/failures in project management and to take lessons from these; Consider the roles of project manager in the organization and management of people; Provide a path for students seeking improvements in their project management expertise.

Additional Notes: This is a core unit for all Master of Professional Engineering students as well as all students pursuing Project Management studies (including Master of Project Management, Graduate Certificate in Project Management and Graduate Diploma in Project Management). No prerequisite or assumed knowledge.

T&L Activities: Workshops: Weekly face to face workshops (two hour per session) which will contain a mixture of quizzes, group work, group presentations and assessments.

E-Learning: All lectures are recorded and students are expected to utilise these recordings weekly if unable to attend the lecture. Additional readings, templates and pre-recorded presentations on selected project management topics are provided throughout the semester as well as additional case study examples and worked solutions to those problems.

Independent Study: Students are expected to commit at least 6-8 hours per week outside the tutorial and lecture sessions

Professional Practice (Level 2)
1. Understand the major roles and responsibilities of project managers
2. Define a project and understand the differences between projects or programs and “business as usual” activities in organisations and their major risks and critical success factors
3. Understand and identify ethical issues facing project management professionals in projects.
4. Understand the project context within organisations, including project selection methods and life cycles, and the organisational constraints which affect the choice of project management methods/approaches, and how these approaches are implemented in practice
5. Understand the tasks involved in scope, time and cost planning and control, and demonstrate the capacity to carry out the plan, and control project performance;
6. Have a broad understanding of the other requirements/components of project plans and performance monitoring, such as quality and risk management, procurement, communications and team leadership
7. Understand the usefulness and limitations existing bodies of knowledge on project management (PMBOKs) from various project management institutions, and integrate (PMBOKs) into studies and projects

Assessment Description: Class/Workshop Assessments: These will include multiple quizzes administered online or group work with oral presentations as class activities during semester. Instructions for each quiz will be given one week before the submission date and may take several forms including:

+ Group activities that result in an individual assessment for participation

+ Traditional online assessments of knowledge

Assignments comprise two written essay format assessments in the style of a business or technical report.

+ Assignment 1 is an individual assignment and must also be submitted via TurnItIn

+ Assignment 2 is a group assignment with groups or teams, and must be submitted via TurnItIn

A detailed description of each assignment will be available online on the unit Canvas site. Each assignment will use case studies based on real projects or realistic industry scenarios.

Exam: A formal exam will be undertaken during the exam period.

Late submissions will incur a penalty of 10% per day for up to 7 days starting directly after the cut off time. This means 5% will be deducted even if submitted on the due day but after the cut-off time. After one week, assessments will no longer be marked receive a 0 mark.

IMPORTANT: There may be statistically defensible moderation when combining the marks from each component to ensure consistency of marking between markers, and alignment of final grades with unit outcomes.

Standards Based Assessment Final grades in this unit are awarded at levels of HD for High Distinction, DI (previously D) for Distinction, CR for Credit, PS (previously P) for Pass and FA (previously F) for Fail as defined by University of Sydney Assessment Policy. Standards for grades in individual assessment tasks and the summative method for obtaining a final mark in the unit will be set out in a marking guide supplied by the unit coordinator.
