Brief Handbook Description: CIVL4860 is a core final year unit for BE/BDesArch students aimed at enhancing students' skills in bridging between the architectural and engineering disciplines. The Unit will have a particular focus on developing strategies for how best to resolve the frequently conflicting interests and preferred concept solutions for addressing architectural and structural requirements for a building with given functions. Students will work in groups on developing final building designs from scratch from project briefs. Architectural and structural designs will be detailed in group presentations and reports.

Additional Notes: This unit is restricted to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Design in Architecture combined degree.

T&L Activities: Groups of about 5 will work on a design brief for given building. The first half of the semester is allocated towards developing conceptual architectural solutions and identifying a preferred building concept. These solutions will be presented and discussed in Week 7. The second half of the semester is allocated towards the structural analysis and design of the chosen building. This may involve design in multiple materials of both the structural frame and the facade depending on the type of building. Presentations of the final projects including architectural and structural designs will be given in the last week, in which also final reports will be submitted.

Groups will meet once per week and have access to lecturers with expertise in architecture and structural design. Thematic lectures will be given in areas peculiar to the particular types of buildings being designed.

Assessment Description: Assessment in this unit is project based. Students in groups will select a building case and then develop architectural and structural designs addressing the requirements of the case continuously through the semester. Student groups will periodically report orally and in writing on the progress of their design, with the main assessment weighting on the final report and presentation. Expected work comprises:
  1. Milestone Architecture progress reports in oral and written form (Week 7 - 0%). The written progress report should include:
    • Draft of architectural design with motivation and a description of architectural challenges
    • First draft of structural design a description of architectural challenges, and
    • The choice of presentation medium
  2. Milestone Structural Engineering progress reports in oral and written form (Week 12 - 0%).
    • Final draft of architectural design, and
    • Final draft of structural design with motivation and a description how the structure supports the architectural idea.
  3. Participation mark (10%) awarded in Week 13 an the basis of the team commitment shown by individual students in the previous group tasks, in particular the Milestone oral and written progress reports.
  4. Presentation (Week 13 - 30%). A presentation will be made by the students of their brief and their suggested architectural and structural solutions, including scrapped alternatives, with motivation. an independent panel assesses the work. Assessment points for the seminar presentation include the following. Did the group:
    • keep within the time limit of 15 minutes?
    • make a presentation using a suitable medium?
    • have a useful function for all its members in the presentation?
    • convey the most valid pieces of information about the architectural concept? See above.
    • motivate credibly the choices made?
    • show the feasibility of the chosen structural system? See above.
    • discuss the challenges and solutions when it comes to the interaction between architectural expression and structure?
    • convey a credible image of a building/structure that meets the brief?
    • inspire?
  5. Project Report. A written report which details the content of the presentation and addresses how the group resolved possible conflicting architectural and structural interest in arriving at the final solution. Assessment points for the written report include the following. Does the report:
    • keep within the page number limit?
    • have a suitable number and choice of images?
    • meet academic requirements on the undergraduate level in terms of traceability and validity?
    • convey the most important pieces of information about the architectural concept? Function, Sustainability, Beauty.
    • state the motives and descriptions clearly, correctly and succinctly?
    • discuss the challenges and solutions when it comes to the interaction between architectural expression and structure?
    • show the feasibility of the chosen structural system? Useful loads and accidental loads (including fire and earthquake loads) in ultimate limit state. Global and local stability. Stiffness in Serviceability limit state. Material economy. Buildability.
    • convey a credible image of a building that meets the brief?

Standards Based Assessment Final grades in this unit are awarded at levels of HD for High Distinction, DI (previously D) for Distinction, CR for Credit, PS (previously P) for Pass and FA (previously F) for Fail as defined by University of Sydney Assessment Policy.
