Brief Handbook Description: This unit will provide a comprehensive conceptual and practical introduction to information systems (IS) in contemporary organisations. Key topics covered include:

* Basic concepts of information systems

* E-business and e-commerce

* E-payment and M-commerce

* Online marketing and social media

* Information systems for competitive advantage

* Functional and enterprise systems

* Business intelligence

* Information systems acquisition

* Information security, ethics, and privacy

Students are required to design an information systems solution as part of the tutorial exercise and the group project. Design (Level 3)
There are multiple group assignments. Extensive research work is required from each student and student team - for case study discussion and group assignments. Information Seeking (Level 2)

Design (Level 3)
1. Ability to apply systems approach to analyse IT-related problem in organizations. Students are put into various situations (in the form of cases) and are required to work out solutions.
Information Seeking (Level 2)

4. Experience team work through the team assignments and presentations.

Assessment Description: Tutorial Exercise: Require students to attend the tutorial and attempt the tutorial exercises. Each tutorial will take 1 mark. There is no makeup or special consideration for missing the tutorial exercise.

Mid-term Quiz: It is an one-hour quiz during lecture hour. It will be closed-book quiz. It must be repeated if a student misses it due to special consideration.

Group Project: A penalty of 20% per day will be applied for late submission.

Final Exam: This will be a closed-book exam. A student must get 40% in the final exam to pass the unit, regardless of the sum of his/her individual marks.
Grading:
Grade Type Description
Standards Based Assessment Final grades in this unit are awarded at levels of HD for High Distinction, DI (previously D) for Distinction, CR for Credit, PS (previously P) for Pass and FA (previously F) for Fail as defined by University of Sydney Assessment Policy. Details of the Assessment Policy are available on the Policies website at http://sydney.edu.au/policies . Standards for grades in individual assessment tasks and the summative method for obtaining a final mark in the unit will be set out in a marking guide supplied by the unit coordinator.
Minimum Pass Requirement It is a policy of the School of Computer Science that in order to pass this unit, a student must achieve at least 40% in the written examination. For subjects without a final exam, the 40% minimum requirement applies to the corresponding major assessment component specified by the lecturer. A student must also achieve an overall final mark of 50 or more. Any student not meeting these requirements may be given a maximum final mark of no more than 45 regardless of their average.

In assessing a piece of submitted work, the School of IT may reproduce it entirely, may provide a copy to another member of faculty, and/or to an external plagiarism checking service or in-house computer program and may also maintain a copy of the assignment for future checking purposes and/or allow an external service to do so.
