Flexible First Year / Science (2023)

Note: This course version applies only to students first enrolling in 2023.

1. Overview

Course: Flexible First Year / Science (2023)
CP Required: 48
Min FT Duration: 1.00 Years
Min PT Duration: N/A
Faculty/School: Faculty of Engineering
Years Offered: 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016

2. Requirements

In summary the requirements are:

Students must complete a total of 240 credit points as follows:

Bachelor of Engineering Honours (168 credit points):

► a minimum of 18 credit points from the Engineering Foundations Table, including all required units;

► a minimum 30 credit points from the Engineering Projects Table, including all required units; and

► a minimum of 120 credit points from the Engineering Stream Table for the stream being undertaken, including all required units; and

► candidates must successfully complete the requirements of the Professional Engagement Program.

Bachelor of Science (72 credit points):

► *12 credit points of Science degree core units (12cp of MATH1XXX in Engineering Core meets this requirement and is not counted toward the 72 cp Science units)

► *48 credit points of Table A major

► 12 credit points of OLE units

► 12 credit points of electives from Science Table A or Table S

* The Science degree core units comprise 12 cp of MATH1xxx units and 12cp of 1000-level units from Table A. The 1000-level units from the Table A major count towards Science degree core requirement. If you are taking a Mathematics major, you must complete 12 cp of other 1000-level Science Table A units.

Advanced units in Maths and Science

Most units of study offered by the Science Faculty on the list of core requirements can be replaced by an equivalent advanced level unit; subject to prerequisite conditions (as required by the Faculty of Science) being met. Students considering doing advanced options should seek advice from their school before enrolling.

Study Abroad

Students undertaking Study Abroad in a particular year of their degree must enrol in the appropriate International Exchange Program units of study as an alternative to a semester`s standard units.

Permission from the relevant Head of School must be sought prior to enrolling in exchange units of study.

Faculty Resolutions

Details of relevant Faculty resolutions are available via the university handbook site at: http://sydney.edu.au/handbooks/

3. Semesters

Year 1 - Semester 1

Type CP CP From
3 Select from MATH1002: Linear Algebra
3 Select from MATH1021: Calculus of One Variable
0 Select from ENGP1001: Professional Engagement Program 1A

Note: All students must enrol in ENGP1001 in their first semester of enrolment.
6 Select from ENGF1112: Introduction to Engineering B
6 Select from ENGG1800: Introduction to Engineering A

Note: Candidates take ENGG1800 to help decide which direction to take. This unit will count as the core Project 1 unit for any engineering stream.
6 Select from Unit Block:
Science Units

Note: MATH1021 and MATH1002 may be replaced by advanced units MATH1921 and MATH1902, subject to prerequisite conditions being met. Students should seek advice from their school before enrolling.

Flexible first year students starting in 2023 will take ENGF1112 in place of ENGG2112 Multi-disciplinary Engineering. This will give students space in Year 2 to catch up on their selected stream.

Students choose a stream of engineering to undertake at the end of Semester 1. In Semester 2 they then follow the program for that particular engineering stream.

Year 1 - Semester 2

Type CP CP From
6 Select from Unit Block:
Science Units
3 Select from MATH1023: Multivariable Calculus and Modelling
3 Select from MATH1005: Statistical Thinking with Data
6 Select from ENGF1661: Flexible First Year Enrolment 1
6 Select from ENGF1662: Flexible First Year Enrolment 2
0 Select from ENGP1002: Professional Engagement Program 1B

Note: MATH1023 and MATH1005 may be replaced by advanced units MATH1923 and MATH1905.

This semester's units should only be used as an enrolment guide. The selection of the stream is required at the end of Semester 1, in which case your enrolment should follow the selected Stream. Note that the MATH units will remain regardless of the selected stream.
