Note: Junior, Intermediate and Senior Science units should be selected so as to ensure that 72 credit points of Science units, including one major, are completed in addition to the units completed as part of the engineering core. Every major requires at least 24 credit points of senior units plus varying amounts of intermediate and junior credit points as prerequisites for the senior units. Please see Science Faculty 2011 handbook for details of specific majors.

This information is correct as of 2015. Since then, other faculties have undergone substantial curriculum changes and, as such, some of this unit/major information may be outdated. Please contact the relevant faculty and review the faculty handbook for more up-to-date information about units, majors and transitional arrangements.

Course: Civil / Science (2015)
CP Required: 240
Min FT Duration: 5.00 Years
Min PT Duration: N/A
Faculty/School: School of Civil Engineering
Years Offered: 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015
Requirements: This course outline should be read in conjunction with the Handbook for the Bachelor of Engineering: http://sydney.edu.au/handbooks/engineering/coursework/engineering_science_combined.shtml

To qualify for the combined BE(Civil)/BSc degree the candidate is required to complete 240 credit points comprising:

(a) 144 credit points of CORE Civil units,

and

(b) 96 credit points of Science units, including one major in a Science subject area.

Science Major

Requirements for the Bachelor of Science component of the degree include a major in a Science subject area (See List of Science Majors). A major requires the completion of 24 senior credit points chosen from units of study listed in the table for that major (except for a Psychology major which requires 48 credit points across Intermediate and Senior units of study as specified in List of Science Majors.)

The Science Handbook can be found at: http://sydney.edu.au/handbooks/science/

List of Science Majors (Areas of Study) can be found at: http://sydney.edu.au/handbooks/science/subject_areas/agricultural_chemistry.shtml

The First Year Guide to majors can be found at: http://sydney.edu.au/handbooks/science/units_of_study/first_year_table_guide.shtml

Civil Engineering Specialisation Streams

Specialisation stream in the BE (Civil) degree is available to exceptional students who meet certain progress requirements.

To satisfy the specialisation criteria students must first be enrolled in the specialisation stream and complete at least 3 Civil electives from the relevant specialisation stream listed below and undertake an Honours Thesis or Engineering Project in a related topic.

(i) Structures Stream: CIVL3235; CIVL5266; CIVL5269; CIVL5458

(ii) Environmental Stream: CIVL3614; CIVL5351; CIVL5668; CIVL5670

(iii) Geotechnical Stream: CIVL3411; CIVL5351; CIVL5452; CIVL5458

(iv) Construction Management Stream: CIVL3805, CIVL4815, CIVL3813, CIVL4810 and CIVL4814

In order to satisfy the requirements for specialisation the candidate may need to complete more than 240 credit points.

Core Civil units which are Science Faculty units: and Additional or "Free" Electives

There are no specific free electives available in this degree.

There are a number of core Civil units which are offered by the Faculty of Science. They are: MATH1001, MATH1002, MATH1003, MATH1005, PHYS1001 and MATH2061 (or the advanced alternatives for these units).

These units may count towards both degrees.

In order to complete the required 240 credit points for the combined degree students may choose Civil electives (from 2nd, 3rd or 4th year) or additional science units.

Choice of electives or additional units will depend upon subject availability, timetabling and prerequisite conditions.

GEOS1003 Introduction to Geology and GEOS1903 Introduction to Geology (Advanced)

Students who need to complete GEOS1003 (or GEOS1903) as part of their Science degree are exempt from the Civil core unit GEOL1501 Engineering Geology and must not enrol in it. They must instead complete an additional unit in a later year from the list of Civil Electives (either 2nd, 3rd or 4th year).

Advanced Science degree options

The Bachelor of Science degree is available in the following options:

(i) Bachelor of Science (unstreamed)

(ii) Bachelor of Science Advanced

(iii) Bachelor of Science Advanced Mathematics

The student should familiarise himself/herself with the requirements of each of these options.

Information about the Faculty of Science Talented Student Program can be found at http://sydney.edu.au/science/cstudent/ug/course/tsp/index.shtml .

Engineering Honours Requirement

Candidates are required to achieve a minimum HWAM (Honours Weighted Average Mark) to qualify for the Honours degree. Students who satisfy all requirements for graduation except the HWAM required for honours will be awarded the PASS degree Bachelor of Engineering.

Other Notes (Civil Engineering Degree)

With special permission from the Director of the Learning and Teaching; Civil Engineering; it is possible to take Thesis or Project A in Semester 2 and Thesis or Project B in Semester 1.

Most Mathematics; Chemistry; Physics and Computer Science units of study offered by the Faculty of Science can be replaced by an equivalent advanced level units of study subject to prerequisite conditions (as required by the Faculty of Science) being met. The student does not necessarily need to be enrolled in an advanced science degree to study these units.
