Biomedical and health informatics is a major related to the areas of information systems, computer science and health care. It is primarily concerned with enhancing health care delivery and patient outcomes through the effective use of and exchange of information. This major helps you to analyse and develop solutions from the biomedical as well as health informatics perspectives. A postgraduate major in biomedical and health informatics will include areas of study such as bioinformatics, information technology in biomedicine, enterprise health care information systems, epidemiology methods and eHealth for health professionals.
Graduate Opportunities: Graduates in biomedical and health informatics can work in a variety of roles including clinical data manager, clinical information manager, consultant, healthcare webmaster, information security manager, medical director for informatics, pharmacy systems analyst, and software engineer. There are career opportunities in hospitals, other healthcare providers, pharmaceutical companies, medical software companies, consulting companies, public health organisations, insurance companies.

A postgraduate major in data management and analytics will provide you with a strong foundation in big data analytics and data science. It will help you build skills and to work with state-of-the-art tools to analyse large amounts of data of a variety of types (big data) to uncover hidden patterns, unknown correlations and other useful information. Foundational technologies such as database management and business intelligence used for both operational (OLTP) and decision-support (OLAP) purposes will also be covered. You will have the opportunity to engage in areas of study including knowledge discovery and data mining, advanced data models, statistical natural language processing, knowledge management systems and computational statistical methods.
Graduate Opportunities: There are opportunities for graduates with skills in database management systems to work in roles such as database developer, data warehouse expert, or database administrator. Professionals in this field are employed in virtually every industry, with the largest number working in information technology.

Digital media technology has become an indispensable part of our heterogeneous computing and communication environment. A postgraduate major in digital media technology will provide you with knowledge in creating interactive and effective digital media products, including the coding, analysis and manipulation of digital media. It introduces principles and current techniques such as multimedia data acquisition, analysis, processing, compression and management. You may engage in areas of study including multimedia design and authoring, multimedia retrieval, statistical natural language processing, usability engineering, visual analytics and an opportunity to engage in cross-disciplinary learning with architecture and design in the area of design thinking.
Graduate opportunities: Digital media technology is found in industries such as marketing and advertising, and in forms such as websites, newspapers and magazines. Anything that needs to be communicated to an audience can contain digital and print images, text or animation to attract attention and deliver content. Digital media technology can be used by web developers, graphic artists, digital photographers, designers, and desktop layout publishers.

From the evolving internet and web, to the growth of mobile, handheld and embedded devices, the critical need for engineers who can build a wide range of software systems and applications has become more acute, over the years. A postgraduate major in software engineering will address all aspects of software production, from strategy, analysis, design, implementation and maintenance. You may engage in areas of study including object-oriented design, enterprise scale software architecture, software quality engineering and enterprise scale software architecture, supplemented with related areas of usability engineering and security.
Graduate opportunities: Software engineering graduates will find employment opportunities in information technology, database management, multimedia and telecommunication software systems, language compilers, internet programming, real-time software engineering, control systems, biomedical systems and artificial intelligence.

Students who choose the Research Pathway will be required to choose a project undertaken in an area related to the major. Students in this category will require a minimum of 12 credit points from the Specialist units of study for the defined major.

To qualify for the Master of Information Technology, candidates must take between 18 and 42 credit points from the Specialist unit block.
Completion of a major is an optional requirement of the Master of Information Technology. A major requires the completion of all core units of study as prescribed by the faculty and at least 18 credit points chosen from the Specialist units of study listed in the table for the defined major.
Students who choose the Research Pathway will be required to choose a project undertaken in an area related to the major. Students in this category will only require 12 credit points from the Specialist units of study for the defined major.
Students who choose not to complete a major as defined will be eligible for the award of a non-major.

IT Project Elective Units
A candidate for the Master of Information Technology must complete 24 credit points from Core, Specialist or Foundation units of study before taking any Information Technology Project units in the Elective block (COMP5705).
Students will be allowed to take COMP5705 from the Elective Block in addition to the Information Technology Capstone project (12 CPS - COMP5703 or COMP5707 & COMP5708). Completion of COMP5705 does not provide credit towards requirements for the IT Capstone Project.
