Note:Award of this major requires a minimum of 18 credit points from the Specialist units listed above. This requirement for the (optional) major is additional to the requirements for completing the degree.

Candidates for the degree of Master of Information Technology / Master of Information Technology Management must complete a total of 96 credit points from the units of study. Completion of a major is an optional requirement of the Master of Information Technology / Master of Information Technology Management.

A postgraduate major in data management and analytics will provide you with a strong foundation in big data analytics and data science. It will help you build skills and to work with state-of-the-art tools to analyse large amounts of data of a variety of types (big data) to uncover hidden patterns, unknown correlations and other useful information. Foundational technologies such as database management and business intelligence used for both operational (OLTP) and decision-support (OLAP) purposes will also be covered. You will have the opportunity to engage in areas of study including knowledge discovery and data mining, advanced data models, statistical natural language processing, knowledge management systems and computational statistical methods.

Graduate opportunities: There are opportunities for graduates with skills in database management systems to work in roles such as database developer, data warehouse expert, or database administrator. Professionals in this field are employed in virtually every industry, with the largest number working in information technology.

Requirements: 1. Candidates for the degree of Master of Information Technology / Master of Information Technology Management must complete a total of 96 credit points, and must fulfill all requirements for their award as defined by the Course Resolutions of the Faculty of Engineering and IT.

2. Candidates commence their enrollment in the Professional Pathway.

3. After completing 24 credit points of coursework, students may then select 12 credit points of Professional Pathway Project units (COMP5703 or COMP5707 & COMP5708).

4. After completing 24 credit points of coursework, students who achieve Distinction average results or above may be eligible for Research Pathway units with the approval of the Program Director.

5. Students in the Professional Pathway must complete 24 credit points of Core units of study, a minimum of 24 credit points of MIT Specialist units of study, a minimum of 24 credit points of MITM Specialist units of study, a minimum of 12 credit points of Professional Pathway Project units of study, a maximum of 12 credit points of Foundation units of study and no credit points of Research Pathway units of study.

6. Students in the Research Pathway must complete 24 credit points of Core units of study, a minimum of 24 credit points of MIT Specialist units of study, a minimum of 24 credit points of MITM Specialist units of study, a minimum of 24 credit points of Research Pathway units of study, a maximum of 12 credit points of Foundation units of study and no credit points of Professional Pathway Project units of study.

7. A maximum of 12 credit points may be selected with the approval of the Program Director from units outside the School of IT (unit codes other than COMP, INFO or ISYS).

8. Enrolment in the Master of Information Technology / Master of Information Technology Management may be either part-time or full-time with a maximum completion time of 6 years.
