Brief Handbook Description: Aim: For students to experience a realistic the design process and to develop good engineering skills.

Course Objectives: To develop an understanding of:

1. The need for and use of standard drawings in the communication and definition of parts and assemblies,

2. Efficient use of a CAD package

3. Creativity

4. The design process from initial idea to finished product

5. Methods used to analyse designs

6. Standard components

T&L Activities: Independent Study: Students will be required to do follow on research of material covered in lectures to get a better understanding.

Tutorial: Two hours tutorial per week. Exercises with tutor assistance based on material covered in lectures.

Laboratory: One hour Computer laboratory, assistance available in the use of CAD

Assessment Description: Assignment A: Freehand Sketch. Will be undertaken during the practical session.

Assignment B: Engineering Drawing Detail and Assembly Drawings using CAD.

Quiz 1: Closed book, short answer quiz based upon the material presented in the lectures between weeks 1 to 4.

Assignment C: Component Design.

Assignment D: Design and Build Project. Contest (10%), Design Report (5%), Drawing Package (5%).

Quiz 2: Closed book, short answer quiz based upon the material presented in the lectures between weeks 5 to 10.

Assignment E: Component Design.

Quiz 3: Closed book, short answer quiz based upon the material presented in the lectures between weeks 11 to 13.
Assessment Feedback: Assesment Feedback is given via:

1. A Feedback sheet at the end of each Assignment.
2. Quizzes contain the correct solutions and they are also emphasised during lecture time.
3. Trends are also discussed in lecture time once an assignment is handed back.

Standards Based Assessment Final grades in this unit are awarded at levels of HD for High Distinction, DI (previously D) for Distinction, CR for Credit, PS (previously P) for Pass and FA (previously F) for Fail as defined by University of Sydney Assessment Policy.
